Jan Van Eyck painted his dog as a symbol of fidelity in Arnolfini’s Wedding Portrait in the 15th century. In the same period the Dutch were colonizing Mauritius Island bringing with them their pets, pests and livestock. The introduction of these animals provided food and companionship for these newcomers but again had unintended consequences. The extinction of the Dodo bird was in fact a result of introducing foreign species, cats, rats, monkeys and dogs,  from merchant ships like those of Giovanni Arnolfini.
